An evening with Adrian Chiles
December 15 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm GMT£15.00
We are thrilled to be hosting broadcaster and columnist Adrian Chiles, as he reads excerpts from his new book and chats with Club Soda co-founder Laura Willoughby MBE about his journey from heavy drinker to moderate drinker.
The Good Drinker: How I Learned to Love Drinking Less, grew out of Adrian’s BBC2 documentary Drinkers Like Me, in which he explored his own – and Britain’s – drinking culture.
As someone who loves drinking, but was prompted by his doctor to cut down his regular consumption of almost 100 units a week to the recommended limit of 14, Adrian discovered there’s a lot of advice available on how to stop drinking, but very little on how to drink in moderation. He decided to work it out himself, and set out across the UK to learn from the secret majority of drinkers who happily stick within 14 units.
Join us for a very special, intimate evening in the Club Soda Tasting Room, in the heart of London’s Covent Garden, as Adrian shares the insights he gleaned about the secrets of moderate drinking, and how in time he learned to love drinking less.
A limited number of copies of Adrian’s book will be available to buy on the night, and he will be happy to sign yours afterwards.
Two important points
- I was drinking an awful lot of alcohol. However, I wasn’t waking up in shop doorways, wetting the bed, getting into fights or drinking Pernod in the morning. Therefore, I told myself, I obviously didn’t have this ‘disease’ called ‘alcoholism’. And, as I didn’t have this ‘disease’, logically I was fine. I wasn’t.
- If I lined up all the drinks I’d drunk in a forty-year drinking career, stretching back to my mid-teens, that line would be around three miles long. This was quite a thought. More shocking than that, though, was the figure I got to when I considered how many of those drinks I could have done without. Or, put another away, how many of those had I really enjoyed, wanted or needed? I reckoned it was no more than a third of them. What a waste. Two miles of pointless drinks. This couldn’t go on. All I had to do was find a way of enjoying the drinks I wanted, and not bother with the rest.
Your ticket price includes a drink on arrival, plus you will also have the opportunity to browse and make purchases in the shop, sample and buy drinks from our impeccably stocked bar, and maybe even ask Adrian to sign your book!
Adrian Chiles hosts Chiles on Friday on 5Live. He co-presented both The One Show and Daybreak, and was for five years the chief presenter for ITV Sport’s football coverage. He writes a regular column in both the Guardian and the Sun, which not many people can claim. His previous book, We Don’t Know What We’re Doing, was about obsessive West Bromwich Albion fans. He has hosted an array of documentaries for the BBC, including Drinkers Like Me (2018) and Panorama – Britain’s Drinking Problem (2020).
