Webinar: Exercise – Making It A Habit with Monica

By Posted in Health

On this week’s webinar, Laura discusses exercise and getting started with it with personal trainer Monica Whyte. We know exercise is a good thing; that it can make us feel physically and mentally better. But how can you make it a consistent part of your life so it becomes a habit?

Monica was a barrister for over 20 years. For most of this time, exercise consisted of running for a train while carrying a heavy rucksack. From about the age of 35 she thought she would try and make an effort with getting fit. Most of the time, this was seeing her Personal Trainer once a week. Then, something clicked. She found she really enjoyed working out. She became a regular gym-goer, making her gym session a priority in her diary. Four years ago, Monica decided she loved this so much she wanted to do this as her career. She qualified as a PT and has since left the bar, and has become a full-time personal trainer.

The webinar looks at the steps you can make on a daily basis what will help to make exercise a part of your life.

Exercise can give you a mental release, make bones stronger, give you strength, flexibility and endurance, and keep the heart healthy. Yet, even knowing all about these good things, getting started and then keeping going, can be an uphill struggle.

Laura and Monica discuss some easy steps you can take that will help exercise become your new normal.
This includes tactics to help you make time for exercise in your day. It does take effort, but it can be done. Starting with small steps, and why you should be exercising every day (but not spending a significant amount of time on it). It is all about building up the consistency, so that exercise becomes as much as a habit as brushing your teeth.

You may have a big eventual goal, such as running a marathon, losing 3 stone, but to get there, you need to break the goal down and make sure you do not feel it is unachievable. If you feel like this early on, it will be harder to keep up the momentum.

To create the habit, exercise needs to be fun. While it may be difficult to find the time in your day, and then actually get started, you should, at the end of your session, feel good. If it feels a chore, and you don’t enjoy what you are doing, not only will you not stick at it, but you will do it so half-heartedly, the benefits will not be as good as they could be. So we will look at ‘what is exercise’ and how it can be incorporated into your daily life.

There may then come a point where it all clicks into place, and you are ready to take the next step in working on your healthy and fitter lifestyle. Monica explains why you may benefit from a personal trainer, and why it is not necessarily a luxury in life.
