The Next Round: What happens after you change your drinking?

The covers of the five books reviewed in this article

New books for Christmas 2024

It’s again time to read and review all the new sober and mindful drinking books that we’ve discovered in the last few months. And this time, we’ve found some completely new kinds of books.

If you need more inspiration and Christam gift tips, you will find all our previous book reviews here. As usual, we give Amazon links for the books for convenience, but please support your local bookstore if you have one!

Millie Gooch: Booze Less: Rethinking Drinking for the Sober & Curious―A Guided Journal

You may already know Millie from her Sober Girl Society community and events, or her previous book, the Sober Girl Society Handbook. Her new one, Booze Less, is a guided journal. What that means is that the book is made up of small writing exercises you can complete on your own. They are designed to take you on a journey from becoming more mindful about your drinking, to quitting, and designing a new sober life. If you like the idea of writing down your thoughts and plans, then this is the book for you.

Victoria Vanstone: A Thousand Wasted Sundays

A Thousand Wasted Sundays tells Victoria’s life in two parallel stories. The first describes her childhood and youth, and all the problems drink and drugs caused her. The second story is about motherhood, and finally giving up alcohol. Victoria’s writing is engaging, and sometimes very funny. But there are also fairly traumatic chapters with violence, and some hard to read sections.

You can hear Victoria talk more about her life and her book on a recent episode of our the Next Round Podcast.

John Asogonnde: Unchained

It is always nice to find a new kind of voice in the quit lit world. John is famous for opening Africa’s first alcohol-free bar in Accra, Ghana. In this book he tells the story of how he started drinking alcohol and using drugs at a young age. A career in the entertainment industry only made things worse. But a spiritual awakening helped him kick the habits, and set up Eden Bar. We were thrilled to meet John at our Conference in London, and look forward to seeing how his career and life develops. He says he wants to become the president of Ghana one day!

Tabbin Almond: Bottling Up Trouble: How alcohol is harming your business… and what to do about it

Tabbin’s book Bottling Up Trouble is also a little different from most books we’ve reviewed. The first half covers the harm alcohol causes, both individually, and for the whole society. The second half goes into more detail about workplaces and alcohol. She writes how drinking can do harm at work, and how employers can better deal with alcohol and their staff. This would be good reading for all HR departments and business leaders.

Camille St. Martin: Spilled – Poetic Confessions of Drinking, Self-Discovery & Recovery

Camille is a writer, poet, author, and spoken word performer. Her book is another new one for our book reviews – Spilled is a book of poetry. You could say it’s quit lit in the form of quit poetry. The book is organised in sections, in a similar fashion to many quit lit autobiographies. The poems move from drinking and all the bad feelings that go with it to quitting and the new world that it opens. There is a lot of variety in the poems here. Some are just a few lines, others a few pages long.
If you’re interested, you can read some samples on Camille’s website and on her social media.
