Denise has produced 18 editions of her new magazine dedicated to low and no alcohol drinks. Something she would never have considered if she had no re-evaluated her relationship with alcohol.

Welcome to the next round, where we speak to people about the next stage of their life once they have reviewed how alcohol impacts them.

You don’t have to be totally alcohol-free to gain benefits from rethinking your drinking. But as this week’s guest Denise Hamilton Mace has shown, you need to have a determination to change your life, and some ideas to get going with.

Denise has moderated her drinking habits, which led her to a degree in sports fitness and then she got brave, and started writing – something she was told way back when, that she may not be suited to. We love it when a guest proves their nay sayers wrong!

Exploring the Low and No Alcohol Revolution: Denise’s Journey of Discovery and Innovation

The rise of low and no alcohol options is transforming how we think about drinking, and Denise’s story provides a unique perspective on this cultural shift. As a hospitality professional turned advocate for mindful drinking and editor of Low and No Drinker magazine, Denise shares her journey of personal growth, career transformation, and creative exploration.

Redefining Life Through Moderating Alcohol

For Denise, the decision to cut back on alcohol wasn’t a dramatic turning point but a series of realisations.

“I started to notice how alcohol affected me over time. It wasn’t just the hangovers; it was the brain fog, the mood swings, and feeling like I wasn’t operating at my full capacity”

Her journey began with small lifestyle changes.

“I stopped eating red meat because it made me feel moody, and alcohol was the next thing I recognized as not serving me.”

Denise emphasises that she doesn’t identify as teetotal or in recovery but rather someone who found more balance by drinking less.

“It’s about discovering who you want to be and whether alcohol helps or hinders that.”

A Career Pivot From Hospitality to Writing

With over 24 years in hospitality, Denise’s career spanned everything from waiting tables to managing large-scale events, including one attended by the Queen.

“I loved making people smile and creating memorable experiences. But the late nights and party culture took a toll, especially after having children.”

The COVID-19 pandemic became a turning point when Denise was made redundant while on maternity leave. Rather than returning to hospitality, she began exploring new paths.

“I started studying sports, fitness, and coaching with the Open University, which led me to rethink my nutrition and lifestyle.”

This exploration eventually sparked her interest in the low and no alcohol movement.

Launching Low and No Drinker Magazine

Denise’s love for drinks and storytelling came together in Low and No Drinker magazine.

“I’ve always loved writing, but I never pursued it professionally. The magazine gave me an opportunity to combine my passion for drinks with my desire to create something meaningful.”

Through the magazine, Denise highlights the innovation and craftsmanship behind alcohol-free options.  The magazine also aims to provide a judgment-free space for readers exploring mindful drinking.

“It’s not about labels or milestones; it’s about choice and enjoyment.”

Breaking Down Industry Barriers

Denise acknowledges the challenges in shifting perceptions around low and no alcohol drinks, especially in a hospitality industry steeped in tradition.

“There’s a lot of resistance, particularly with wine, where centuries of tradition come into play. But the low and no alcohol sector is creating new paths and pushing boundaries.”

She also emphasizes the importance of advocacy.

“Consumers need to be vocal about wanting better options. The more we ask, the more businesses will adapt.”

Denise explains. Her work with the magazine and within the industry focuses on making alcohol-free choices more accessible and celebrated.

A Culture Shift in the Making

For Denise, the rise of low and no alcohol options represents more than a trend; it’s a cultural shift.

“This isn’t a fad. It’s about normalising the idea that not drinking is a valid choice.”

Every time someone chooses an alcohol-free option, it contributes to a broader societal change that reduces the stigma around not drinking.

Looking Ahead

As Denise continues to grow Low and No Drinker magazine, her focus is on reaching more people and expanding the conversation around mindful drinking.

“I want the magazine to be a trusted resource where readers feel supported, not judged.”

She’s also working on a book and exploring other creative projects.

“Cutting back on alcohol gave me the clarity and energy to pursue my passions. It’s about focusing on what excites you and letting go of what doesn’t serve you.”

Her journey is a powerful reminder that reducing alcohol intake isn’t just about what you’re giving up—it’s about what you’re gaining: clarity, creativity, and the freedom to explore who you truly are.
