A-Z Sober Females

Mindful Drinking – The A-Z of female celebs who don’t get smashed

Is this just another tabloid/gossip mag type ‘celebs who don’t drink’ list? No, it’s not. Recovering from addiction, kicking overuse to the kerb, or choosing to be more mindful of how much we drink, are all incredibly inspirational processes – so I’ve included moderation as well as abstinence. Here’s a range of kick-ass women and why they choose to limit the booze. Because everyone has their own story.

(Don’t worry guys, there’ll be an inspirational male list soon too).

Anna Wintour

Anna Wintour

Kicking off our A-Z is Anna Wintour. One of the most powerful people in fashion, she’s been editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine since 1988. She simply ‘doesn’t drink’ according to this 73 questions interview.

Blake Lively

Blake Lively

Best known for her role as Serena Van der Woodsen in Gossip Girl, beautiful and talented Blake doesn’t drink and has never been interested in drinking or drugs.

Christina Ricci Christina Ricci

As a self-confessed goth, I’ve been a fan of Christina ever since she played Wednesday Addams in the Addams family. She partied all through her 20’s and then, like many people, decided to knock the booze on the head “because I didn’t think it was very good for my life.”

Davina McCallDavina McCall

Davina is a woman who you can’t help but find inspirational. She doesn’t drink at all due to her previous drug addiction into her twenties, with the fear that “I’ll have another one and another one and another one. I can’t just have one of anything!”

Eva MendesEva Mendes

Another strong, talented, dazzling woman who has changed her life. Eva dealt with substance addiction issues, which led her to give up drinking almost 20 years ago. In her own words during an interview in 2008, “I’m proud of people who have the determination and the fearlessness to actually go and face their demons and get better.”

Fearne CottonFearne Cotton

Successful DJ, presenter, and TV personality Fearne was once known as a ‘party girl’, but now chooses to lead a more moderate lifestyle with her family, whilst continuing with her career.

Gywneth PaltrowGwyneth Paltrow, Gillian JacobsGillian Jacobs

We’ve got TWO awesome female G thangs. Gillian Jacobs plays the leading lady in ‘Love’ – but she couldn’t be further from her recovering addict character – as she’s actually never had a drop of alcohol, she just never really felt like it. Gwyneth is more famously known for her occasional periods of abstinence from alcohol, for wellness reasons, and is probably the epitome of a ‘Mindful Drinker’. She’s now a confirmed moderate drinker, who very occasionally enjoys a glass of red wine.

Hannah Reid Hannah Reid

The supremely talented, captivating, and surprisingly shy Hannah is the stunning voice of London Grammar. Unsurprisingly, she’s very protective of that voice, so chooses not to drink in favour of exceptional vocal chords.

Isabella Rossellini’sIsabella Rossellini DAUGHTER

Ok, this may be cheating, but it’s a good’un. Elettra Rossellini Wiedemann’s story is simple – she chooses not to drink because she gains weight really quickly when she does. I feel you Elettra, I feel you.

Jessie J
Jennifer Hudson
Jennifer Lopez
Jada Pinkett-Smith
Jamie Lee Curtis

Jessie J, Jennifer Hudson, Jennifer Lopez, Jada Pinkett Smith and Jamie Lee Curtis

There was too much variety in history and reasoning in the selection of J’s that I found, to just choose one. Jessie J doesn’t drink due to a medical condition, Jennifer Hudson has never had a drink in her life, Jennifer Lopez doesn’t drink to protect her skin/health, Jada Pinkett Smith quit drinking around 9 years ago when she was drinking too much, and Jamie Lee Curtis has been sober for 18 years, having struggled with addiction into the start of her 40’s.

Konnie HuqKim CattrallKristin Davis

Konnie Huq, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis

Konnie Huq may not have been in Sex the City like her ‘K’ comrades, but she’s still had a pretty banging career as a TV presenter and is now happily married with children to the satirical genius Charlie Brooker. She doesn’t drink, and never has, due to her Muslim upbringing. As for the city women, Kim Cattrall doesn’t drink because it gives her headaches and Kristin Davis quit drinking when she was 22 because she felt it would affect her capability of pursuing her acting career.

     Leona Leona LewisLewis

Singer, songwriter, and animal rights campaigner Leona doesn’t drink because she simply doesn’t like the taste of alcohol.

Madonna

Madonna

Madonna – a woman who I associate with rebellion and mindfulness in equal measures – makes our list as a moderate drinker. She doesn’t drink at all whilst on tour, however, will treat herself to a glass or two to celebrate once it’s over.

Natalie PortmanNatalie Portman, Naomi Campbell  Naomi Campbell

Natalie Portman may have partied when she was at college but since then it’s never really been her thing. Naomi Campbell admits that drinking was a bit of a problem for her and that it contributed to her well-publicised mood swings and aggressive outbursts. She’s been sober for over 10 years.

Kelly OsbourneOsbourne, Kelly

OK, slightly cheating again. Kelly started drinking and using drugs in her teens, before embarking on her recovery 9 years ago in her mid 20’s. Her father Ozzy’s health issues and near death experiences as a result of his own addiction, have undoubtedly helped her through her own recovery – with the additional determination to not end up in the same boat.

Polly VernonPolly Vernon

Polly went from drinking a mighty 20-24 units of alcohol per week, a figure not that alien to many women/people who don’t consider themselves heavy drinkers, to just 4 or 5 per month. She’s not a recovering addict and she didn’t drink for emotional reasons, she just enjoyed it – until she had a 10 day batch of booze-free flu which resulted in her looking and feeling better afterwards instead of worse.

Queen Latifah

Queen Latifah

She had a run in with overuse of alcohol in the past, as a reaction to grief, but she brushed herself off and overcame it. She’s even been known to breathalyse-test her party guests before allowing them to drive home, and calling them a cab when they fail the test. What a woman!

Rachel StevensRachel Stevens

Having previously admitted to being drunk when she took her driving test at the age of 17, Rachel has been a renowned teetotaller/moderate drinker for some years.

Shania TwainShania Twain, Sarah SilvermanSarah Silverman

You know what doesn’t impress Shania Twain much, other than being a rocket scientist, having a car or being Brad Pitt? Alcohol, that’s what. However, she’s now happy to have a couple of beers at hockey games. As for Sarah Silverman, she just doesn’t have the palate for drinking, and she finds drunk people terrifying – “they’re very grabby.”

Tyra Banks Tyra Banks

Television personality, producer, businesswoman, actress, author, former model, and occasional singer Tyra Banks hasn’t had alcohol since she tried a few sips when she was 12.

Una HealeyUna Healy

Previously a member of The Saturdays, Una has just released her first solo album. As a busy, successful musician, and mother, she’s ditched the party lifestyle and embraced moderation –  “I like to have a couple of drinks, though I’m past that stage in my life of having a big night and hitting the clubs.”

Kat Von D

Von D, Kat

Kat has been sober for 10 years now, having given it up when she realised that it was getting in the way of her career as a tattooer. She’s now the most famous and influential woman in the tattoo industry, paving the way for tattooing to become less of a sausage fest.

Whoopi GoldbergWhoopi Goldberg

A controversial choice due to her recent launch of cannabis topical pain rubs, however, the incredible Whoopi has dealt with crippling addiction problems in the distant past and describes herself as ‘straight as an arrow’ now.

X-Men’s ‘Storm’ – AKA Halle BerryHalle Berry

See what I did there? The ever youthful and radiantly beautiful Halle Berry avoids consuming anything that could potentially make her look like shit/less amazing – and this includes alcohol.

Yoko OnoYoko Ono

Yoko doesn’t need alcohol to dance naked inside a black bag, the last time she drank alcohol was a “Pink Lady sometime in the 1950s.”

Zoe BallZoe Ball

Z is the most dreaded letter for the author of any A-Z list. So now there’s another reason to love Zoe Ball. She’s been teetotal for 1 year now, having felt she no longer had control over her drinking.

So there you have it; there is a multitude of reasons as to why someone might adjust their drinking habits, and now there are a multitude of alcohol-free adult drinks out there to make the switch a little easier. If you’re sober, moderate, mindful, sober-curious, or just a little intrigued by the alcohol-free drink options out there, then come along to the Club Soda Mindful Drinking Festival. 13th August 2017, in Bermondsey Square, 12 noon to 6 pm.
